Major Richard Walderne
Richard Walderne built the first sawmill at Cochecho Falls, now Dover, in 1642. Walderne had been a major during King Philip’s War and became one of the best-known colonial figures associated with Dover’s frontier experience. He was killed in the June 28, 1689 Massacre of Cochecho.

Memorial tablets and historic interpretation
The Society of Colonial Wars in the State of New Hampshire and the Margery Sullivan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution marked the burial site in Dover of Richard Walderne on September 18, 1918 with two memorial tablets.
